9일(현지시간) 로고프 교수는 기고 전문매체 프로젝트 신디게이트에 올린 칼럼에서 “장기적으로 비트코인의 기반이 되는 블록체인 기술은 번성해도 비트코인 가격은 폭락할 수 있다”는 견해를 밝혔다.
비트코인 가격은 연초부터 지금까지 365% 폭등하며 5천 달러(약 569만원) 돌파를 눈앞에 두고 있다.
하지만 로고프 교수는 각국 정부가 어떻게 움직이느냐에 따라 비트코인 가격이 결정될 것이라고 전망했다.
각국 정부가 탈세와 불법자금 유통, 투기 과열현상 등의 이유로 가상화폐 규제에 나서고 있기 때문에 가상화폐 투기 수요가 줄어 결국 비트코인 가격이 폭락할 수 있다고 로고프 교수는 지적했다.
또한 각국 중앙은행들이 앞으로 독자적인 가상통화를 만들어 보급하고, 정부가 자국 가상통화에 유리하도록 규제를 이용한다면 비트코인의 지금과 같은 입지가 유지되기 어려울 것이라는 견해를 내놨다.
로고프 교수는 “화폐의 오랜 역사를 보면 민간 영역이 혁신을 하고, 정부가 규제를 하고 이를 이용해왔다”며 “비트코인 가격이 앞으로 얼마나 지속될지 모르겠지만, 이같은 운명을 피하기는 어려울 것”이라고 내다봤다.
비트코인 등 가상화폐를 둘러싼 각국의 규제는 제각각인 상황이다. 중국은 탈세와 자본유출을 우려해 ICO를 전면 금지하고 자국 내 가상화폐 거래를 중단시켰다. 반면 일본은 비트코인을 합법적인 지불수단으로 인정하고, 금융권에서도 가상화폐 개발이 활발하게 이뤄지고 있다.
우리나라는 지난달 29일 열린 관계기관 합동회의에서 금융위는 “ICO를 앞세워 투자를 유도하는 유사수신 등 사기위험이 증가하고, 투기수요 증가로 인한 시장 과열 및 소비자피해가 확대되는 등의 우려가 있다”며 “기술·용어에 관계없이 모든 형태의 ICO를 금지한다”고 밝혀 고강도 규제를 예고했다.
